Here in my local town, the state capital of Kallyforynia, we do have bike lanes. There are respected by the Autos, and sometimes the bicyclist has to share the lane with a transit bus moving along the same direction into some bus stops.
I am glad to hear you had a headlight, and I hope you have a speedy recovery. Too bad you can't come out west, and teach some of your fellow bikers to stop at railroad crossings, and intersections with Red lights. Last Friday a bicyclist ran a red light and hit the second car of a commute train.
In your case, it sounds like the construction company should have done a better job of protecting you..
