Since all the other obvious choices have been identified (i.e. tankless on-demand, electric water heater, power-vent gas fired, and high efficiency with ultra-low exhaust temps utilizing PVC exhaust pipe) i will mention one additional choice. The direct-vent water heater. Very similar to what you are currently using but with a co-axial style side wall exhaust/intake system which vent the exhaust gases outside your home while admitting fresh combustion air.

You may even be able to retro-fit this sidewall vent to your existing unit.
