My son attended a private university last year. Four weeks into the semester he was hospitalized for a week with a nervous breakdown. He was unable to go back to class and dropped out upon the advice of a college psychiatric counselor. The university is still after him to pay the full tuition bill (no room and board is involved as he did not live on campus). They have refused to discuss any partial payment of any kind. He has $2000 in assets and the bill is $17,000. He is enlisting in the Marines next month. The last letter from the university said they would turn the matter over to a collection agency and add over $5000 to the amount due. What are his options?
