Sometimes the voltage from the coil to the plug encounters too much resistance (or too little resistance) and will seek the path of least resistance. This can be from spark plug wire to spark plug wire, spark plug wire to ground etc... and yes, even on the DI system the spark will jump from the coil through the rubber boot directly to ground bypassing, the spark plug. With a spark plug wire system, you can see this at night if you open the hood (assuming you have a bad/worn wire). I know a mechanic that smoked as well even while working around batteries. He'd been doing it for many years until one exploded and nearly took the side of his face off. Warnings are there to protect you.
