local PUD wanted $5000 or so to run a cable, and so i decided to go solar instead-got a bunch of good stuff-used-and we havn't had a 'power down' in the 13 months since we built the house! FWIW the local substation has burnt down once, plus all the normal outages that one has in small towns. sometimes we only find out the was a failure weeks later because someone is complaining of food going bad, etc!
We live a pretty normal life-i built a hybrid solar/gasoline set-up (going diesel/biodiesel next spring) that is pretty much self regulating. generator comes on when you use heavy loads, and charges up the batteries when they reach a certain level. it's actually pretty slick, even if i do say so myself!
and yes, the batteries should be vented upwards (hydrogen moves upwards at 'escape velocity' is what i was told) and corrodes electrical equipment pretty well, project for the spring...
have a 24vdc sunfrost fridge, cf's all around, laptop computer hooked up to dc lcd monitor, so we really use about 2-3 KWhrs a day...
