Just like there are real estate, automobile, jewelery, antique and God knows what else appraisers, there are companies who appraise domain names. (The good thing for you is then tend to appraise higher than you might expect). Like Herb said, on top of the sale cost, you have to figure any other costs you may incur, such as legal fees, registering a new domain, stationery, updating your customers, etc, etc. That adds up very fast. "Profit" from the sale is also taxable. Don't know what name you've got, but the guy who registered mortgage dot kom just paid his registration fee, and sold it after a few years for $1M. The guy who bought it then actually did some marketing and sold some mortgages and turned it into a viable business, and sold it for (I think) $10M.
Some guy registered Ford dot kom and 'cybersquatted' on the name until Ford Mo Co tried to register it, and couldn't. They sued him claiming they basically had a God given right to the domain, and lost. He wanted several million $, so Ford decided to use FordMotorCompany or something like that. He probably still has the domain... LOL
