Incidentally, I was going straight when the end-swap occurred.
Here's another factor. When you switch from 4WD (or AWD) to 2WD, you are demanding more traction from your rear wheels. I was headed downhill and was off the gas trying to hold speed with engine braking. All four wheels were helping brake. By switching to 2WD I may have pushed the rear wheels past their traction limit, initiating the skid.
4WD may not be that great in turns, but in the old Blazer it was a heck of a lot better than 2WD. In 2WD on slick ice it was like the steering wheel was disconnected. It just went straight no matter what you did. Admittedly the tires weren't the greatest, big fat ones with chunky mud tread.
