History of On-Star (very condensed)
Short story is that when On-Star was "born" they chose to use the analog Cell network as a means to communicate (analog offers longer range then digital, also was available in more areas).
As time progressed, On-Star started to equip their units with mainly analog and digital ready transmitters (cell towers).
Later on On-star went with digital only.
That being said the FCC mandated that all analog cell towers must be shut down by 2008, and all cell towers must be be digital (main advantage is more calls per tower).
So if you have a On-Star unit that is analog only your are SOL.
If your On-star unit was analog/digital ready then it may be possible to convert your unit to digital and not have a inturreption of service.
If you have a digital only unit then you have nothing to worry about.
My 2001 Viggen On-star unit was analog only so I am SOL, My On-star account has been cancelled. The cool thing is that all of the data the On-Star receivers in my car gather are still available and they can not contact On-star for help/dial home.
Expect many On-star mods to be coming out soon.
I think it was in 2004 that the cell units became Analog/Digital ready, if you have a digital ready unit then an upgrade should be availible.
Digital only should cause no problems.
