It was scheduled to be cancelled when the new Corolla was introduced, but Toyota is having their share of problems too. Huge recalls associated with some of their other new products had postponed the introduction of the new Corolla, hence the old model (and the Matrix) was continued.
The "twin" of the Matrix is the Pontiac Vibe. Both are made by NUMMI (co-owned by Toyota and General Motors) in the old GM Plant in Freemont California between San Jose and San Francisco.
