My 37" HewlettPackard LCD TV (a Sharp Aquos in a different enclosure and a lower price) has a contrast ratio of 1000:1. In general, Contrast Ratio measures the difference between blacks and whites. On totally black images, 1000:1 is not completely black - I am the only one in our house who notices this.
Newer TVs have higher contrast ratios, but most computer monitors have less, i.e. 500:1. Plasma TVs have traditionally had a much better contrast ratio, but LCDs are narrowing the gap.
