Fusion's right about the resolution - 1080p is quickly becoming the new standard, and it'll be nice to have the capability for 'high-def' movies (be it blu ray or hd-dvd) once there's a clear winner. Your sitting area's proximity to the display is a factor as well - the closer you are, the more resolution you want. Similarly, the larger the screen, the more resolution you'll need to keep the image looking nice.
Some other factors why I prefer (and own) LCD over plasma:
1) Power usage. LCD is typically 1/2 to 1/3 the drain as plasma
1a) Heat. Side effect of the power usage in a plasma.
2) Picture quality - personally I like the 'crisp' nature of an LCD over the (admittedly superior) motion handling capability of a Plasma - though with recent advances, LCD is quickly catching up in that regard
3) LCD is fast becoming the display of choice - most manufacturers and retailers are really pushing LCDs, which is driving the cost way down, where they used to be much higher than plasma.
In terms of brands, I strongly recommend Sharp Aquos, Samsung, and Toshiba (I currently own a 42" Toshiba Regza 1080p and an 26" Aquos 720p)
Good luck!
