the further down you go the better, in most ways. Key West is nice but has been tourista-fied by the cruise ships. Still fun to go to. There are funky places to stay there, plus the usual hotel chains.

Water temps will be OK for the most part, but don't count on my judgment on this as I used to windsurf on the North Shore of MA from May to Sept, so have a different sense of temperature.

There is one road in and out, traffic runs at about 40-45 mph for the most part. Very laid back pace all over. Go to Bahia Honda State Park just over 7-mile bridge for what can be a fairly empty beach.

When you drive south from Miami, be sure to take Card Sound Drive to get around all the traffic up around Key Largo and the northern keys.
