Insurance wants to total my '93 900S, what to do?

So I was stopped for a pedestrian when a lady hit me from behind. Damaged my bumper, nothing irreparable. When I got in the car to drive away, though, the shifter was out of whack and I had to muscle it into gear.
Three days later, now, my Saab shop says if the transmission has to be replaced (likely), the insurance company will want to total the car (KBB is ~$3k, transmission jobs are ~$3.5k). Of course, you can't find a '93 900 SPG very easily, much less in as good condition as this one, much less for less than $5k. Furthermore, my 900 has Bilsteins, lowering springs, fancy wheels, an alarm system and several other more minor improvements (including what was a one-year-old transmission!)
So there's a few things I've thought I could do:
- let them total it, try to prove the car's worth, buy something else. Maybe a 9-3
- try to prove the car's worth before they total it so they'll realize the wisdom of repairing it
- let them total it, try to prove the car's worth, buy the car back from the insurance company with a salvage title, repair it
Complicating the matter is that the insurance guy says that if they replace the transmission that they'll want to use a used transmission, and since I don't have receipts for the transmission that just got put in (because previous owner did it himself), I can't fight them on it, even though it's obvious to the mechanics that it's a new transmission. Finally, there's the fact that even if I could go and buy myself a shiny newish 9-3, I'd be sad just to think of this beautiful car ending up at a wrecker.
So, I guess I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice on any of the many quandaries here. The two main points being: how can I get the car's actual worth from the insurance company, and would I be better off (cost aside) with a 9-3 or repairing the 900?
Thanks much,
Ian
