I'm not sure either, and neither is anyone else ;) I *do* know that the transmission was buttery smooth before the accident, and right afterwards it was hard to get into 1-5, and impossible to get into R. Furthermore, getting to 1st takes the shifter right up to the console, whereas before it'd been nicely centered.
I had my foot on the clutch when I was hit, and the gear in 1st, and the mechanic thinks it might have something to do with that, ie. if my foot came off and it was partly engaged during impact.
At first the insurance company wasn't believing that the trans. hadn't been damaged beforehand. I think the mechanic (a Saab specialist), and the fact that the car is pretty undrivable (can't get the key out anymore) has convinced them, though.
