Snow tires and cars for winter

I posted the other day about the difference between having and not having snow tires. Then I got to thinking about how different cars work in the snow. How much of it is tires and how much of it is just the balance of the car? Sure, RWD cars are generally at a disadvantage, but FWD isn't always better, since on hills the weight transfer is to the rear, which can reduce traction.
Someone posted elsewhere on this board recently that a Prius was bad in snow. Another said a Saturn was not a good snow car. But it makes ya wonder, given that the engine is over the drive wheels, just how some cars seem better than others in snow, and it seems to go beyond tires.
Still, I know my 9K is terrible in snow with the summer tires on it, so tires are the biggest part of the equation, but other stuff is still going on. Maybe it's just that the inherent balance of a car shows up more when the traction is very limited, so Saabs just work better when the roads are bad. I don't know.
Thoughts on this, anyone?
