As a Postal Employee, my 1st thought is that the carbon copy got ripped off as it went through the automated sorting machine in the USPS sorting system. This happened to my water bill last month that got returned with the check that was torn in two and half of the envelope. I have seen mail come through with burn marks on them before.
Your mail probably took this route: University> Downtown sorting facility> Your Post Office> You.
Unless you live in a tiny rural town a hundred miles from civilization, the mail probably wouldn't go straight from the sender to your local P.O.. Hope this puts you a little more at ease.
But it wouldn't be a bad idea to see what you may need to do to protect yourself "just in case". I'd be worried, too, if this happened to me.
A great website to learn about this kind of thing is the one consumer advocate, Clark Howard, has.
