While Carfax can give you additional data points on a car... and they give a warranty of some sort (which I still don't understand)... I once was heavy into looking at cars and purchased the unlimited use for some amount of time license. I found it more useful for figuring out where the car had been (via the registration locations) than anything.
Then one bored night I struck upon the idea of running Carfax reports on all of the Saab's I already owned. A couple since new and so I knew everything about those cars in particular. Well.... the results were disturbing to say the least. My wifes 1987 900S, which we sold a couple of years ago (for $1,000) with 387,000 miles on it working R-12 AC, new clutch, brakes and really in good shape, had been in TWO accidents, one of which required towing. A four door model the front passenger door and B pillar had to be replaced after getting T boned on the highway. Not on the Carfax. I did disclose this to the buyer and he was both impressed and ok with it. Also my 1992 9000CDT was hit in the RF passenger door, required replacing the door and painting the entire side of the car, required a tow to get off the freeway, had a Highway Patrol report done on scene, again no carfax notes. I will continue to use carfax for a where has this car been registered, but nothing else. Of course YMMV.
