It all depends on the car, dealer, and the buyer. How 'hot' is the Rogue right now? Is it something dealers can't keep on the lot or have they been sitting there for a while? Personally, I haven't seen any out on the roads yet and would guess it's not that big of seller. If it's a hot commodity where you live, expect to pay close to or above MSRP (I seriously doubt it's a big seller right now though).
How hungry is the dealer? Go in at the end of the month to have the best shot of the dealer wanting to make a sale (to reach a sales target). Some dealers are more willing to negotiate than others. Check around. Fortunately, you probably have several Nissan dealers to choose from and work against. Also, go online and get quotes from dealers in a 100 mile radius or so.
How bad does your son want the Rogue? If he has his heart set on it, he may have to spend a bit more. If he doesn't care between the Rogue, RAV4, and the CR-V, then he's much better off simply finding the best deal.
Edmunds, Kelly Blue Book (kbb),and others have pricing guides as well as information about incentives that are currently being offered. Edmunds also has some good articles about how to negotiate, what to do and not to do, and what to expect when buying a car.
