Before investing in a geothermal system, consider all of the passive options. The orientation, amount of glazing (i.e. windows), roof overhangs, internal mass in the building etc. can all be adjusted to net roughly a 50% cut in heating and cooling costs without major impact on the house aesthetics. The most "alternative" of energy solutions is conservation, of course. This is particularly effective in climates like yours where you get warm days and cool nights on a routine basis.
There's a ton of books available on this topic, try Amazon.com or if you're picking out an architect find someone who's experienced in this area.
Heck, if you want virtually ZERO energy bills, go hook up with the Earthship guys over in Taos, NM (http://www.earthship.org). Radical but well-tested, and I think housing of this type will be very valuable after a few more decades of rapidly escalating energy bosts.
