Back in the 70's and 80's, there were considerable differences between Saab and Volvo. Saabs were FWD and Volvos were RWD. Saabs were round, Vovlos were square. Saabs were more performance oriented, and Volvos were anything but. Saabs were the unconventional approach, and Volvos were the conventional approach to making a car.
They both were interesting, nice-riding cars with an emphasis on safety. But having driven both in those long-lost days, Saabs always had a more performance bent, and Volvos were much more staid.
OK, how about now? Darn fine question. Saabs and Volvos are both swoopy. They both have turbocharged engines. Volvo went FWD, and then went AWD; Saab is just catching up.
Now, look at that paragraph, and you could put in names like Mercedes, BMW, Subaru, VW, and even Saturn. The differences between cars has narrowed a lot over the past decade. So the difference between an '08 93SS and a S60 is pretty small. But back in the old days, when some of our opinions were set in stone (that's how much of the writing was done then), they were very different.
