a friend of mine who is a major league gearhead has a lift in his garage that only lifts the car a couple of feet. But this means he can slide under it on his creeper and do all kinds of stuff, while never having to bother with jackstands. He's very skilled and does *everything* on his car himself and says this type of lift works well.
The lift is hydraulic and has the appropriate safety locks, etc. I think they cost about a grand.
If you want a regular lift, you need about 12 feet vertical, more if you plan on hoisting up an SUV or van. If you use traditional rafters rather than a roof truss you may be able to get the interior height up where you need it, especially if you can use 10 foot sidewalls instead of the normal 8 foot or can do something funky with the roof design.
