Check with another copy shop. FedEx Kinko's wont' do it because years ago Kinko's (under its founder, Paul Orfalea) was sued for copyright infringement when they copied textbooks. There is no real danger to them, but it's something they and other shops will worry about.
For an out of print book you have a few options:
1. Copy it yourself at work (assuming you have an office copier where you don't have to account for copies).
2. Copy it someplace that won't worry about the copyright and have your pal reimburse you. Doesn't hurt to ask if a shop will copy it. Many shops have "walk-up" or "convenience" copiers that you can use without assistance.
3. Do you have a friend with a home office who has a copier you can use and reimburse him for the copies?
4. If you have a scanner or a multi-function printer at home, you can the manual so you have images of each page and print those.
5. See if you can find one on e bay, Craig's or other online site. Maybe even in the classifieds here at TSN.
