Part of my niche market is designing dealerships. A big pita is that every brand wants it's own little store. It's even worked it's way up to ultra-luxury low volume brands (Ferrari, Bentley, etc.). They used to tolerate it somewhat as long as the two brands didn't share much. Now they want everything seperated. I have literally divided buildings in half so each brand could have it's own little realm... Take it a step further, and you'll realise Saab, Caddy and Hummer have vastly different "images"...they also have certified mechanic's for each brand, different parts, different service agreements and warranties, and they'll still need just as much space for each brand. Sounds good on paper, but they don't share too much.. At best, this might be good for Saab since it will allow a non-Saab dealership to start selling them (introducing them to new regional markets).
I can see why GM thinks this would be a good idea, but the reality is your local established Saab dealer is probably sweating. It's doubtfull they have the financial resources to expand into a mega-mart... So, that gives someone else (like a national chain) the opportunity to come in and grab the franchise lease if they build a new facility if they don't update. Didn't that happen to Taliaferro (aka Genuine Saab)?
