Ethanol has solvent properties. As it sloshes around your gas tank it will likely dissolve some varnish that may plug your fuel filter; the same happens after the filter too, BTW. Additionally, water and ethanol mix, unlike gasoline and ethanol. If there is any condensation in your fuel system it may mix with the ethanol blended gasoline and cause transitional problems in that regard.
After it’s been run through your car for a while it will clean your fuel system and perhaps some engine components.
Don’t forget that ethanol helps prevent engine pre-detonation and actually burns cooler.
There has been some talk lately about ethanol breaking down plastic and rubber parts. While I have yet to actually read anything on this, I can believe that it would be true. Old rubber seals and plastic parts weren’t developed with ethanol in mind. May be why the other poster wrote about leakage from the carb fuel bowls.
