A few weeks ago I saw an episode of Myth Busters where they forced water heaters to explode. They were using electric water heaters, but I suspect a gas water heater would act in a similar way. They bypassed the 2 thermostats and monmitored the temperature. At around 300 degrees the water heater exploded. Did you have one of those water rockets as a kid? They were the kind you filled half full with water and pumped with air and shot off. The same thing happened with the water heaters, except instead of having a few ounces of water in them, the water heaters have 40-50 gallons of water in them. The ones that exploded traveled 300-400 feet in the air. They even built a small house with a roof to code and the water heater went right through it. If your water heater is over 10 years old, I would just get a new one and not worry about the thermostat... Ron
