So what does this mean for Saab?.... Posted by MI-Roger [Email] (#882) [Profile/Gallery] (more from MI-Roger) on Fri, 2 May 2008 11:59:54 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
From the attached article, it sounds as if Fritz Henderson has the same difficulty as Bob Lutz when conversing with the media.
So GM realizes eight brands are too many, but it is too costly to drop any of the remaining eight? So where does Saab stand in this?
The new 9-4X is a positive sign. The rumored 9-1 will be a positive sign if the product is approved. A new 9-5 is a positive sign. The 12 year gestation period for the new 9-5 is a big negative sign. Saab is already a global brand, something Chevy and Cadillac are striving to become, another plus for Saab.
Clearly Chevrolet, Saturn, and Cadillac are safe based upon the level of new and improved product being sent to these Dealerships. Chevy and Saturn are also stand-alone brand channels. Pontiac-Buick-GMC is a composite channel as is Cadillac-Saab-Hummer.
Personally, I see nearly the entire P-B-G channel as weak. Other than the Buick Enclave there is not one clear new winner. The G6 is a big seller but is 3 years old and competes directly against the new Malibu and Aura. GMC existed solely for Pontiac Dealers to sell trucks, but if Pontiac dies it will probably take GMC with it.
Will Hummer replace GMC by concentrating on tougher trucks? Can Buick exist as a China brand only? Can Saab remain as the Euro near-luxury brand in the US when Saturn is selling all Opel vehicles here?
