a turbo engine? And do you keep cars a long time--as in 100K or 150K miles?
I know some tests show 15K is OK on a good synthoil, but the tests I've seen are not on turbocharged gasoline engines. It may well be that 15K changes are OK, but where's the downside of a more frequent change? It's what... $25-$30 if I do it myself (a 20-30 minute process)? Driving about 12-13K miles/year, I do the oil in my 9K about every 6K and the extra $30 seems pretty reasonable. A 5K interval is Saab-recommended for my wife's 9-5, which goes about 15K a year. The problems of longer intervals on these cars is well-known. In fact, given the trouble Saab and other automakers have had with sludging due to extended OCIs, it seems reasonable to keep the interval shorter. And don't forget, OCI also depends on the kind of mileage: lots of stop and go versus more highway miles.
As for disposal, mine goes to the town transfer station where it is collected and used to heat the public works garage and building in winter. If my indy were to do the change, the used oil would go to heat his shop. This way there is virtually no waste in the process.
A final thought. If you just trade your car at a dealer it wouldn't matter, but if you were trying to sell it privately and a prospective buyer asked how often the oil was changed, how do you think they'd react to hearing "every 15,000 miles?"
