There's a place in Seattle currently working on a C900, Posted by nicknick [Email] (#731) [Profile/Gallery] (more from nicknick) on Sat, 31 May 2008 17:53:47 In Reply to: Electric Motor Conversion, Doug, Sat, 31 May 2008 13:53:09 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
but the price will be waaayyy high ($12k-$20k) and even the high end conversion is only going to get 60-75 miles on a charge, mostly due to those crappy lead-acid batteries, and no regen braking.
i think we may have to wait a while for better batteries.
the good news is that the standard motor they were talking about using put out about 110 hp, with all the torque available from zero rpm, so there is no reason to think that there can't be a good performing (i said good, not great!) electric saab soon, just need those batteries....
friend of mine just did a chevvy pick-up conversion. kept the 5 speed, though only uses 2 and 3 really. other points of interest are a ceramic heater in the a/c box (no a/c, obviously) for heating, a small vacuum pump for brake booster (not required for any saab with abs pump), high pressure tyres (i think 60psi), and many fail-safes on the electrical system!
the biggest problem he had was people walking out in front of him because he wasn't making any noise! we joked about having a small speaker system playing a track of an old V8 burbling along under the hood for slow moving traffic!
