I understood that if you use an AC motor you can get regen on braking. If you use a DC motor you don't get regen.
There is a site that sells coversion parts:
http://www.electroauto.com/catalog/price-pts.shtml
but like everyone is saying it's pricey
I was just wondering if anyone had any novel ideas about doing the conversion on the cheap.
