I've had both engineered hardwood (3/8" thick, top 1/3 is hardwood - oak, bottom 2/3 is plywood) as well as prefinished 3/4" thick solid oak.
The engineered wood was glued down to the concrete slab, and required at least 1 or 2 return trips by the installers to fill "hollow spots" where the floor didn't bond to the concrete. Of course, my concrete slab was nowhere near flat (thank you Centex Homes). Once installed, you couldn't tell it was not full thickness solid wood. I think it was Mohawk brand. If our floors were plywood instead of concerete, I think they would have been nailed down.
My solid wood floors were nailed down (multi-story house with plywood subfloors). We chose prefinished wood in both cases to speed installation and avoid the dust and odors of the finishing process, even though a finished-in-place floor looks nicer.
Our oak floors were finished in both natural and a cherry/cider finish. Cherry wood itself is quite soft (our dining room and bedroom furniture is all cherry, and it dents easily). That said, it is also easy to dent or scratch the oak flooring (dogs, kids, in-laws, etc.)
If your floors are FLAT, a floating floor should be okay. If they are not, you might hear the "dead" spots as you walk across the floor. I think you need to glue the floating floor boards together, whereas nailed-down floors get nailed to the subfloor. Even so, you do get some creaky spots which I heard you can fix by "lubricating" the boards with a bit of swept-in talc.
Hope this helps.
