Talking to a brother-in-law yesterday who has a FFV Impala, and he was lamenting the lack of easy access to E85, and the fact that his owner's manual advised him to not switch back and forth between E85 and regular gasoline. He was afraid that he'd ruin his engine. I found this a little hard to believe, but a little searching on the web last night found some posts regarding this. I didn't find anything conclusive, but it did back up his claim of what the manual might have said.
Is this just GM rushing FFV's out the door, without a good fuel management system? It seems to me that there should be sensors in place to accurately determine the fuel composition, and adjust the fuel delivery (and engine timing, if necessary) accordingly. These things should be smart enough to know if there's 100% E85, 0%, or anything in-between.
I did find one article mentioning the FFV(s) that SAAB is developing, that have the same mpg whether E85 or regular gas. Everybody else's FFV'see reduction in mpg when running E85.
Actually his argument about availability was a little hollow, as Ft. Wayne has enough E85 pumps to keep his tank filled, if he used a little foresight.

Please try to NOT to hijack this thread to the merits of corn-based ethanol. It's not that I don't consider that a valid concern, just please start another thread, if you would. thanks
