Not exactly hypermiling, but I've been experimenting with different techniques while re-setting the mileage computer to give me immediate feedback (which probably isn't exactly accurate, but it gives me something). True hypermilers do some pretty dangerous thing, imho, but here's some stuff I've learned saves gas for me.
Don't stop unless you have to. Time lights; roll through stop signs at 5mph; park where you can pull straight out to avoid one start.
Stop lights drink gas. I've been killing the engine any time the light turns red in front of me. I've read that you should always kill the engine if you're going to be sitting for 30 seconds or more, but I think the number is probably lower than that on my car.
Coast. Leave the AC off when you can. Keep your tires inflated.
Reasonably quick acceleration doesn't seem to use more gas than creeping acceleration. Rapid acceleration, however, does. Be conservative, but you don't have to dawdle.
I can get the 9-3 5-speed up to about 25 mpg (calculated; not on the computer) on all in-town driving trips of 1 to 4 miles with a top posted speed limit of 35 and lots of stop-and-go.
