SOME THOUGHTS...... Posted by Herb Hirsch [Email] (#114) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Herb Hirsch) on Tue, 24 Jun 2008 10:44:05 In Reply to: car tires and gravel roads, steve, Sun, 22 Jun 2008 21:52:22 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
A tire well suited to gravel roads would be very different from one selected for highway or winter driving.
If you're doing this kind of driving extensively I might even consider a truck with greater ground clearance. A Subaru Outback with its' greater ground clearance and 4 wheel drive might be a thought. Or, the new Saab 9-4X coming this fall might be an answer.
If you're going to use a Saab then I'd think in terms of a tall tire (55-65 aspect ratio), and a large footprint (25-235mm).
Given those parameters, I'd look for a set of truck tires and wheels that'll fit in the wheel well.
Driving on gravel is a certain route to very short tire life. Tires that hold up a little better will include noise, poor handling on pavement (wet and dry) and degraded mpg. If driving on gravel is primary, I'd think in terms of a different vehicle, or, if it's a Saab, tires better suited to performance on gravel with many of the compromises referenced above.
