and know that a 2-4 year old bike is going to be a lot better deal for my needs. Amazing how they depreciate! The brands you note, Trek, Giant, Specialized, etc., are what I'm looking for. I know from having a semi-decent road bike (Motobecane) some years ago, that I can add better components if I have a decent frame.

A bike shop near me has some different brands but really pushes Jamis. They seem okay but I have no sense of how good they really are.

I'll spend more than the $350 I noted if it's a good bike. Just want to get the most for my money.
