done a fine job convincing people that their lives will end calamitously and messily if they don't have AWD. Sure, AWD is nice and it IS nice in bad weather, but it's rare that it would get me anywhere a Saab with 4 snow tires won't, assuming the car isn't scraping bottom on an unplowed road. IMHO, AWD let's people go faster in conditions where they shouldn't--as the AWD cars and SUVs in the media strip attest during many a snow storm.
And with gas prices, I wonder about the mileage penalty with AWD. If you live up a mountain road and get a lot of snow, sure, AWD is pretty much a necessity, but not for most people who get it. Here in NH, 4 snows, traction control and ESP on the 9-5 seem to do just fine.
