The Subie is nice but do a long test ride and really compare the interior size. Two years ago we looked at Subies and like them fine on a short ride--15 mins-- but when we took one out for an hour and drove on a lot of different roads and thought it came up short. The seats were too hard and the ride was jiggly, at least on rural roads here in NH. Even on bigger roads the ride seemed "busy," I guess is the word. Would have been tiring on the 4+ hour rides we do to Maine. After 45 mins we couldn't wait to get back to the dealership.
Size depends on your needs, but we thought the Subie was too small, especially in the back seat and "way back." It is narrow and back seat room is tight if you are toting kids. Since this would be my wife's car and she'd be toting #2 daughter (then 13) and her pals places, and we'd use this on vacations, we needed space and the Subie is just too small.
We looked at both the regular and turbo versions. The turbo cars absolutely fly! And handle very well. Fun cars if the ride and size aren't an issue for you. We wound up with a used 9-5 Linear wagon with a CPO warranty.
If I were going non-Saab, I'd look at a Volvo S50, maybe an Audi or VW. BMW or Merc if you have the bucks.
