Our family hauler is a Passat W8 wagon. We looked at several wagons a little over a year ago and it came down to the previous-gen Passat (both V6 and W8 editions), the A6, and the Subaru Legacy GT. We were open to buying any three and simply held out until we found an excellent example of either of them resulting in finding a W8.
We wanted AWD thanks to our winters and poor snow removal service here in our city. My wife was not interested in getting another Saab despite my repeated attempts. After a little over a year of ownership, I love the W8 more and more. It's very thirsty but it's a great long-distance cruiser; the more I drive it, the more I like it.
The Legacy GT was a close second on our shopping list thanks to the fun factor as well as the reliability. The major drawbacks were the terrible road noise, the typical Japanese tinny feeling of the materials, and I just can't stand the frameless windows.
Are you looking for suggestions or is this just a hypothetical question? If it's hypothetical, I would love to get my hands on an Alfa 159 wagon. I'm also seriously considering getting a diesel Jetta Sportwagon in a couple of years.
