I'm guessing it's because a lot of wagons (at least the upper-scale variety) are AWD. Obviously Subaru is only AWD and good luck finding an Audi without Quattro, especially in Avant form. If live in a climate with a winter and want a BMW or a MB, you definitely don't want the non-AWD version. Saab, VW, and a few Volvo's are about the only examples of upscale FWD wagons (that I can think of).
FWD definitely works just fine but the selection is limited.
