...and so I have less optimism about all this than you, Scott.

Saab has always tried to develop technology that could make more efficient use of fuel, but their attempts to actually put new ideas to use in new product over the past decade have gotten squashed more than once.

Meanwhile, we got the 9-2X (not so bad), and the 9-7X, a total antithesis of what Saab has meant over the decades.

Just like you don't invade a Middle Eastern country and expect to impose American style democracy on it, taking an American SUV and trying to force-marriage it with a brand associated with Scandinavian style, efficiency and respect for resource utilization was a distraction that drained resources and attention that could have been better used on new, true Saab product.

If the rumors are true that Ford is shopping Volvo to a Chinese buyer, even with their sales significantly above Saab's, and given the integration that Volvo has now within the Ford corporate structure, who's to say that a desperate GM won't just pull the plug, technology or not?

I am holding my breath that even this far along, GM won't simply cancel the introduction of their new 9-5 and 9-4X next year. If that happens, no amount of PR spin from their press office will stop the death knells from tolling for Saab.
