Sweden are in a joint venture with the US in developing a new electric car, report Swedish newspaper, Dagens Nyheter.

The so-called plug-in hybrid car will have a longer battery life than previous models so that it won’t have to be charged up so often and will therefore create fewer emissions.

Swedish car giant Volvo are behind the manufacturing of the car while the US Department of Energy have developed the charging stations.

While more common on the other side of the Atlantic, the public-private partnership is one of the first in Sweden and comes as part of the government’s commitment to develop environmentally friendly hybrid vehicles run on bio-fuels.

Last week just over 40 billion dollars was set aside to achieve this goal.
