Why am I not surprised? So many people these days don't want to take responsibility for anything.
He IS responsible for performing scheduled maintenance, but I bet he can get away with not doing it. The dealer probably doesn't care (since he'll probably put the car out to auction) and will "overlook" the lapse of maintenance to make sure the deal for the next car goes through. Mike Lynch could better answer this, but I do wonder just how thoroughly dealers check service records of cars coming off lease.
It seems to me that it is in the dealer's and manufacturer's best interest to try to ensure people bring in cars for routine service--which is what the free service deals are all about--but there is only so much they can do. Even with free service I suspect there are a lot of people who just can be bothered.
