All valid points, but then why do Toyota and Honda, which also build cars here, continue to eat GM's and Ford's lunch? GM may sell a lot of mid-size cars, and some of them are pretty decent cars. But they are losing the game because they generally refuse to do better than status quo.
IMHO, the average domestic car buyer would buy a Chevy that had the same reliability, customer care and build quality of a Toyota, Honda or Nissan if it happened to have a a Chevy bowtie and was called a Mailbu. They ARE buying brand, but just because some people are happy with lukewarm quality doesn't mean they wouldn't like it better if the cars were another notch or two better in quality. They don't know the difference.
It's sort of like car seats. Most people don't realize car seats can be comfortable for an 8-hour drive because they have never had a car with good seats. Then they get in Saab or Volvo or Audi and take a long trip and realize the difference.
