I don't fault GM

I don't fault GM for many parts of the problem. It's the fickle consumer. The consumer want clumsy SUV's. They make a huge profit for the company, possibly $10,000 a vehicle. If not SUV's, the consumer likes big pickups. With pickups, GM and Ford outsells Toyota by a wide margin. Mazda and Subaru don't even have a large pickup. So if I were a big American car company, I would build lots of big SUV's and pickups. It would be hard to say in 2006, "I'm going to wind down production and start retooling for small cars".
What I fault GM is for mediocre design. Mediocre paint that fades. Drum brakes. Boring cars. They know how to do better! Sometimes they do design it better. The automatic transmissions of the 1960's were far superior to many European cars automatic transmission.
