Yes, we are funding our own demise by our obsession for SUV's and minivans and big yahoo-pick-em-ups. Russia has the world's largest natural gas supplies and either the 2nd or close to the 2nd oil reserves. It's difficult to get to because of the frozen tundra, inacessible areas, and harsh climate, but with fuel prices high, it's cost effective.
They're rolling in the cash. I nearly got a job in Moscow, speak Russian, and have followed events and studied them for years.
Thanks largely to our giving them money for fuel, they just had their first "Den Pobedi" (Victory Day) parade in May with modern tanks, the world's best rocket launchers, new aircraft, and more. Since the fall of communism (only the titles have changed, the players are still there) they hadn't been able to afford such equipment. They are again sending their bombers and long-range sorties and challenging our ships and planes.
Frankly, in Moscow, their standard of living for an expat is higher than here in the U.S. People are buying cars, foreign travel, vacation homes, and lots more. I am happy they are having a higher standard of living though it's not all over the country. 100k outside of Moskva, and you're back two hundred years.
