In the BMW line the entry level bike is the F650GS produced from 2001 through 2007. Having said that many folks take their F50GS's around the world. The R1100/1150/1200GS line is more popular, but a very large percentage of folks do it on an F650GS because for a single rider you can get all the lights, cases, racks and stuff amd the fuel economy is much better and the chain drive 650 is easier to work on than the shaft drive bigger GS'.

An F650GS also comes with all the big bike BMW features that you don't get on most other middleweights or enduros such as ABS - Anti-Lock Braking System, Heated Grips, a Center Stand, and there are many, many choices for windscreens and luggage.

Problem is there aren't many down in that price range.
