Understood.
I suppose I'm more mad that he would tell me (in no uncertain terms) that no aftermarket alternative exists and that I won't be able to get a cheaper part. Clearly he didn't know this for sure, as he stated. If I found two cheaper alternatives the first place I looked then clearly he was attempting to mislead me. He told me that it was fine to drive as it was, and that a cheaper aftermarket motor was due out very soon. When it was available, he would let me know.
It seems that he was gambling that I would just take his word for it. This was a high-pressure tactic being used against someone who was not in a position to argue. He thought that I realised the car was un-driveable (I didn't), and since it was stuck in his shop in another town far from home that I had no choice. After I told him that I would like to take the car home, his bluff was called.
Telling me at that point that the car shouldn't be driven would have revealed his ruse. Letting me drive away, only to break down nearby, would likely have led me right back to his shop to consent to the work afterall...with additional repairs, as well.
