Mark the area during the day with something tossed at the hole so you can find it in the dark.
After dark, empty can of bee killer into hole, then plug hole. I used a couple apples fallen from the tree, jammed into the hole with my foot, worked fine.
I've done the gas and match trick too, nearly blew up my old metal gas can when the gas dribbled across the lawn, and caught it on fire. Fortunately, I had brought a watering can, and a split second decision to decide and empty it on the gas can worked.
