Some yrs ago I mowed over a hornet nest too...after retreating to the garage, all I could find to retailate with was a can of brake parts cleaner. It was instantly lethal. I don't remember if it was the chlorinated stuff or not, but it worked great! Since then, I keep a can handy all summer...any segmented stinging insect (ie excluding honey/bumble bees) gets sprayed on sight. I stock up whenever it's on sale...it's good for degreasing nasty car parts too ;)
