I agree with all the recommendations - the Finger Lakes area is very pretty, Fall colors could be good in the Bristol Hills and Naples area (Grape Pies for sale!) near Canandaigua Lake. I think you can ride the ski lift at Bristol Mountain to view the colors. Plenty of golf around. If the weather is uncooperative and you like museums, Corning has the Museum of Glass and Rockwell Museum, also Rochester Museum and Science Center Don't know how late in the year it stays open, but Genesee Country Village in Mumford is quite interesting, it's a restored 19th century village. Lots of small museums along the Erie Canal villages, too.
Niagara Falls should be on your list as mentioned.
Romantic overnight getaways? Geneva on the Lake or Belhurst Castle - both on Seneca Lake.
