Audis with Quattro (their four wheel drive system) have independent rear suspensions with adjustments for camber and toe-in. The front end is adjustable for toe only, but has a subframe that can be shifted from side to side a bit, altering the relative camber but not the total camber. My local indy who repairs our Audi A4Q will not touch or even recommend anyone but the dealer to do the four-wheel alignments properly - and the dealer charges $250 for this work.
Fortunately, I found a local shop in Northfield, Illinois, that does ONLY alignments, the very best Hunter laser/electronic alignment system, special rack, etc. - well regarded on the Porsche buletin boards, probably has better equipment and knowledge than the dealers. For $100, they made our A4 drive like new. This was done immediately after taking the car to a well-regarded local tire/service shop that totally botched the alignment (had 0.5 inches of rear toe-in after they were done, I believe that the spec is zero) after replacing a rear wheel bearing.
Tire wear is not inherent on these cars if they are maintained properly, but there are many, many parts to wear on a five-link front suspension system and Audi has has major issues with some of these parts (lower control arms and tie rod ends in particular). Our car with 110K miles is only on its third set of tires, which were put on last November at about 103K.
Note that if your friend has non-factory lowered suspension, all bets are off - the geometry will be incorrect.
